The Tampa Bay Lightning have just released a devastating update on star forward Steve Stamkos.

According to an announcement via the Lightning's official website, Stamkos has suffered a core muscle injury and will now require surgery to repair the damage. Additionally the Lightning are reporting that Stamkos will miss a whopping six to eight weeks as a result of this injury, a timeframe that could have a significant impact on his ability to appear and perform in the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. This is obviously a massive blow to the Lightning, especially considering that it comes immediately following the trade deadline, a time frame that would prevent the Lightning from potentially using the cap space they would save by placing Stamkos on long term injured reserve.

The Lightning's star forward was injured on Tuesday during a matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs but until today there had been no update of any kind from the team. Stamkos was having himself another outstanding season, recording 29 goals and 37 assists for the Lightning for a combined 66 points in just 57 games played. Stamkos also boasted 22 penalty minutes and a plus minus rating of +14 on the season prior to suffering his injury.
