After the Montreal Canadiens season came to an end, Habs general manager Marc Bergevin delivered an end of season press conference and some of the things he said during that media availability were immediately called into question.

Most notably among those was his insistence that there was absolutely no way he would consider a trade involving superstar goaltender Carey Price. Those comments arose suspicions because just late summer Bergevin made nearly identical comments about his then star defenseman P.K. Subban, and of course by now we all now how that turned out.

However the speculation about a possible trade involving Carey Price was nothing but fan theory and despite Price entering the final year of his deal, it seemed extremely unlikely the Habs would make such a move. Now though we have comments from one of the game's top insiders, and it seems he has his own doubts about Carey Price's future as a Montreal Canadien.

“I think that Marc Bergevin has some major decisions to make this summer and I think the Montreal Canadiens are at a crossroads,” said Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman as per Fanrag's Chris Nichols. “And no matter what was said about Price wanting to stay and the Canadiens wanting him to stay, I think when everybody sits down and takes a hard look – how close is Montreal going to be to winning, and what kind of decisions is that going to make for them.”

As the Canadiens are currently constructed there are a great many people who doubt their ability to be serious contenders for a Stanley Cup, and based on the moves made by Bergevin this season it's clear that the goal was to do just that. If the Canadiens feel the need to tear it down in order to have a hope of building a competitive team once again, Carey Price would be an extremely valuable trading chip to put it mildly.

That being said, with Canadiens fans currently watching P.K. Subban shine for the Predators in round 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs, a trade involving Carey Price would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to sell to that fan base.
