The story used to be the same in Pittsburgh for the past several seasons: star forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin weren’t going anywhere. While things remain the same for the captain, it might have come to an abrupt change for Geno.

Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports sources within the Penguins’ organization say management is considering almost every available option to have the biggest impact for the next several years. They even go to say that includes everything from possibly trading key players such as Malkin, Kris Letang and Phil Kessel…

The Penguins might not be looking to make a major overhaul but be more inclined to acquire younger, affordable talent who can keep the club’s championship window open.

There has been chatter that defenseman Olli Maatta will be traded this summer. Moving him would free up $4.083 million in salary-cap space and could allow the Pens to get an upgrade.

While general manager Jim Rutherford might have wanted to scare his players into doing better next year, it remains to be seen if he will shock everyone by moving Malkin this summer…
