The Toronto Maple Leafs do not play today but that does not mean that the team is sitting idle as we head towards the new year. In fact after making a pair of roster moves on Sunday the Maple Leafs have made two calls ups on Monday, adding a pair of defensemen to their roster for the moment at least.

According to a report from Toronto Maple Leafs beat reporter Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun, the Leafs called up both defenseman Timothy Liljegren and defenseman Teemu Kivihalme from the American Hockey League today. It is unclear if this is just yet another paper transaction on the part of general manager Kyle Dubas or if there is a real chance here to see either man make their debut in the National Hockey League as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. In the case of Liljegren in particular there must be a burning desire to get a shot at some real NHL action given the fact that he has already been called up to the main roster a number of times this season, only to never have his number called when it actually came down to it. That being said though the Leafs have been dealing with the realities of the NHL's salary cap all season long and it would not come as a surprise if this were just another call up that went by without either man getting any ice time in the NHL.

The good news for both players here is that they will obviously be intimately familiar with the man that they will be playing for if they do finally get the call, given that Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe was previously the head coach of the Toronto Marlies. In the case of Teemu Kivihalme the Minnesota native has 3 goals and 4 assists for a combined total of 7 points in the AHL this season and boasts a plus minus rating of +4 on the season thus far. Liljegren on the other hand has appeared in 27 games for the Marlies and he has 3 goals and 14 assists for a combined total of 17 points on the season and currently sits at a plus minus rating of -2.
