The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a pair of roster moves prior to facing the Florida Panthers on Sunday night, and the two moves are both significant ones.

According to an official announcement from the Toronto Maple Leafs Department of Public Relations, the Maple Leafs have activated forward Andreas Johnsson off of injured reserve after a prolonged layoff due to injury. Johnsson had been out of action since early December when he suffered a "leg" injury against the Colorado Avalanche although it still remains unclear if he will be available for the Maple Leafs this evening. The leg injury was a hard shot off Johnsson's skate and no doubt his skating is what will determine his availability for tonight's game. According to a report from The Athletic's Joshua Kloke it sounds like Johnsson will be a game time decision for head coach Sheldon Keefe this evening, although I suspect that the idea here is to have him return given their decision to activate him today.

That was just one of the moves made by the Maple Leafs on Sunday however and unfortunately we are all out of good news. Again according to the Maple Leafs Department of Public Relations the team has placed veteran defenseman Jake Muzzin on injured reserve, no doubt designed to be a corresponding move for the Leafs. Interestingly enough there has been no mention of Muzzin being placed on injured reserve retroactive to the date of his injury, which would appear to indicate that the Leafs defenseman will miss at minimum another week of action. Like Johnsson Muzzin was injured when he blocked a shot with his skate during a game against the New Jersey Devils back on the 27th of December. Muzzin was listed as week to week at the time of the injury so it is not all that surprising to learn that he will continue to miss an extended length of time due to the injury.

The Maple Leafs have not provided any information regarding the recovery process for either player so outside of their moves on injured reserve today there has been no real update on either player. The Leafs are just moments away from facing the Panthers however so we will likely hear something regarding Johnsson's status in very short order.
