We already knew that Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ilya Mikheyev was going to be out for a very long time thanks to a report earlier today, however in spite of knowing that his injuries were relatively serious I was not prepared for the gruesome details that were shared by the Maple Leafs' organization on Saturday morning.

For those of you who missed it, Maple Leafs forward Ilya Mikheyev was seriously injured on Friday night thanks to something of a freak accident that occurred during the third period of the Friday night matchup between the aforementioned Maple Leafs and the New Jersey Devils. Mikheyev was defending a rush from the Devils when Devils' forward Jesper Bratt fell awkwardly to the ice resulting in his feet sailing through the air as he fell off balance. Of course hockey players have very sharp knives attached to their feet when they are out on the ice and in this particular instance that resulted in very bad news for Mikheyev. As Bratt fell off balance his skate blade came up and sliced Mikheyev across his right arm, resulting in a serious injury to the Leafs forward.

We would later learn that the blade had caught Mikheyev in his right wrist and that the cut had been severe enough that it was causing blood to spurt from the injury as he raced to the Maple Leafs' locker room, but the news on Saturday morning revealed just how bad that cut had been. According to an official announcement from the Leafs Mikheyev suffered a severed artery as a result of the cut as well as severed tendons in his wrist and arm.

From the Leafs:

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ilya Mikheyev was taken to University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey for surgery to repair an artery and tendons in his wrist that were severed during the team's game against the New Jersey Devils last night.

Mikheyev's agent Dan Milstein had similar things to say while adding that it would be at least 3 months before a prognosis for Mikheyev's return could be established.

From Milstein:

Ilya Mikheyev of the Toronto Maple Leafs has had a successful surgery to repair an artery and tendons in his wrist. He is expected to make a full recovery but a more accurate timeline for his return will be provided in 90 days.

This one sounds like it could be a season ending injury, and with severed tendons and a severed artery I can certainly see why.
