The click is ticking for Mark Stone and the Ottawa Senators, however it seems to be affecting everyone in the NHL.

Earlier this week, Ottawa Sun Bruce Garrioch reported that the Senators tabled a “serious and comprehensive” offer to Stone last week and were hopeful they’ll receive an answer back shortly. However, the trade deadline is just around the corner and he might have to make uo his mind today.

In the meantime, this has caused teams to look elsewhere on the trade market for help up front.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reported Thursday that some teams are worried over how long the Stone situation is taking to play out in Ottawa and are now turning their attention to secondary targets such as Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes of the New York Rangers.

LeBrun notes that teams don’t want to risk waiting until Monday to bid on a player and wind up with nothing.

The Rangers are getting ready for a busy trade deadline as it seems that no progress has been made about a contract extension with pending unrestricted free agent forwards Hayes and Zuccarello.

It remains to be seen what the exact asking price for either player is, but Hayes is expected to command a higher price that may include a first-round draft pick as part of a package. The New York Post believes Zuccarello could be moved for a draft pick and/or a prospect.

All we know is that Senators should know soon about Stone or else interested teams will acquire other players instead…

Stone, who is carrying a $7.35-million cap hit on his expiring deal, currently leads the Senators with 28 goals and 62 points in 59 games. The Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames and Vegas Golden Knights have reportedly expressed interest in Stone.
