Matthews shuts Ovechkin up with perfect reply to his comments

We can’t say the kid is wrong, right?

Alex Ovechkin might have had the last word last night, scoring the overtime goal to get his Washington Capitals the 4-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, it feels like Auston Matthews got the best of the Russian superstar when he faced media after the loss.

Before the game, Ovechkin was asked about the battle scars the Capitals required to earn before winning the Cup in 2018. The captain took the time to advice the young players on the Leafs roster.

“I think it helped a lot when your core group of guys stays together and go through that, coaching staff, players,” Ovechkin said after the Caps’ morning skate.
“You can see it took four years to realize what we have to do. We make mistakes, coaching staff makes mistakes, you get a chance to take (it to) another level, we all came together and it works.
“I think for them, they are still a young group of guys and I hope they’re going to learn. It’s up to them how they want to do it and if they want to play for yourself, or if they want to win a Stanley Cup they have to play differently.”

Matthews wanted to reply to Ovechkin and did it without any animosity. However, his words hit hard and we can see how they would shut Ovechkin up quite well.

Here is what Matthews had to say:

“How many times did they lose to Pittsburgh before finally breaking through?”

The Boston Bruins might have won two times in the first rounds against the Leafs, but Matthews is right. The Capitals struggled for many years against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Did the Caps win because they followed Ovechkin’s advice that he generously offered the Leafs?

You have to admit Matthews’ rhetorical question is well said.
