It was a nerve-wracking summer for Patrick Marleau, who finally did ink a one-year pact with the San Jose Sharks, and now he will get to face the Toronto Maple Leafs for the first time since the trade that sent him to the Carolina Hurricanes, where his contract was bought out on Friday.

Marleau won’t only be facing his former team, he will also get to play against his two close friends Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews, who also know about stressful times of the offseason. Marner of course battled to get a new contract done ahead of the season with the Leafs while Matthews shocked everyone by getting into some legal issues back in May.

Leafs management had to deal with the news that was finally made public during the preseason, however, Marleau was already aware of the situation. As he revealed on Friday ahead of the game between the Sharks and Leafs, Matthews contacted him this summer to talk about the incident,

Marleau knew long before Leaf management learned about disorderly conduct charge.

I don’t think he thought it was going to be as big an issue as it has become.”

“There’s always two sides to every story, so I had [seen] him in the summer and talked about it and, it’s hard how things get played out in the media sometimes so everything is a learning experience and you learn from it and move on.”

As you may remember, Matthews was charged with disorderly conduct this summer in Arizona after he harassed a female security guard in his building complex. Matthews and a group of friends attempted to open car door as she sat inside completing paperwork at 2 a.m. local time. This led to a confrontation between Matthews’ group and the guard during which Matthews allegedly pulled down his pants.

Let’s hope Marleau had some good advice for Matthews so that he doesn’t make the same mistake in the future.
