Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid spoke to the assembled media after a 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Sunday night, and during that media scrum he made it clear the decision for the National Hockey League's concussion spotters to pull him from the game was both surprising and ill-timed.

"Yeah I was pretty shocked to be honest, I hit my mouth on the ice."

"You reach up and grab your mouth when you get hit in the mouth it's a pretty normal thing. Obviously the spotter thought he knew how I was feeling and he pulled me off."

The Oilers would have had a solid opportunity to capitalize on a potential point had McDavid, their most potent offensive weapon, remained on the ice after the play instead of being pulled out by the spotter, and he knows it.

"Sh**ty timing in game to I guess. Little bit of a partial 5 on 3 and going to the powerplay in the second period."

You can watch McDavid take questions from the media in the video below.
