Honestly… this is such a fitting first goal for a guy who works his tail off every night.

McKegg scores his first as a Ranger on hilarious blunder by Red Wings

In case you missed it last night, forward Gregg McKegg scored his first goal as a New York Ranger and… well it has to be seen to be believed.

While on the penalty kill, McKegg did a good job of forechecking down low in the Detroit Red Wings’ zone. After ripping a high shot on Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard during a two on two rush, McKegg simply went hard to the net. He was rewarded for this after Howard completely lost track of his rebound and Red Wings forward Tyler Bertuzzi completely skated past the puck and ended up losing an edge. The puck popped right down in front or McKegg just in time for him to pop it home.

What an odd, yet perfect goal for McKegg. The 27 year old has worked hard to endear himself to Rangers fans who were less than excited when he was named to the team’s opening night roster this season. McKegg’s spot on the Rangers’ roster comes at the expense of young rookies like Vitali Kravtsov and Filip Chytil, making McKegg, along with Micheal Haley, unpopular players amongst much of the Rangers’ fanbase.

The thing is… McKegg has been an absolute workhorse in the six games he’s played this season. The journeyman forward has played 138 career NHL games split between the Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, Pittsburgh Penguins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs. In 41 games with the Hurricanes last season, the gritty winger put up a career high six goals and 11 points. The native of St. Thomas, Ontario was originally drafted by the Leafs in the third round (62nd overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft after a successful OHL career with the Erie Otters and London Knights.

While he may not have the high-end skill of players like Kravtsov and Chytil, it’s still nice to see a player like McKegg, with his work ethic and his “lunch pail” mentality, get rewarded on the scoresheet. You just KNOW that his teammates were absolutely LOVING this goal last night.
