It seems extremely unlikely at this stage of things that Steven Stamkos will re-sign with the Tampa Bay Lightning prior to listening to what other teams have to offer in free agency. With that in mind one of hockey's top insiders, TSN's Bob McKenzie, was a guest on SiruisXM NHL and made some noteworthy comments about the process.

First it appears that McKenzie believes there may be teams that are favorites to sing the talented forward, because when asked he mentioned the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs and surprisingly the New York Rangers by name. However those three are far from being the only teams involved in a major way.

McKenzie would go on to reveal that he believes over ten teams are prepared to make a long term offer of over 10 million per season for the Tampa Bay Lightning's captain.

"I could see upwards of a double-digit number of teams probably prepared to give Stamkos double-digit millions on 7-year contract," said McKenzie as per Nichols on Hockey.

Those are staggering numbers on both counts, and with this much competition one has to wonder if the team that does sign Stamkos will end up overpaying to acquire him.
