When the Toronto Maple Leafs signed head coach Mike Babcock to a huge contract they secured themselves one of the best coaches in the National Hockey League, but they may have also secured themselves a powerful recruiting tool.

Not only is Babcock well respected among coaches and pundits, but as a long-time member of Canada's National program he also has the respect of a great deal of players as well, and now he may be using that to his advantage.

According to a breaking news report from Craig Custance The Athletic Babcock is currently attempting to sway one of the top free-agents on the market, current San Jose Sharks forward Patrick Marleau and he may be doing the same for Joe Thornton.

According to an NHL source, Mike Babcock is putting the hard sell on Marleau and it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s done the same for Thornton.

Marleau has over 500 career goals to his name, and could serve as a great mentor to the young group of forwards on the Maple Leafs roster, and Babcock may be showing himself to be the most valuable coach in the league.
