Mike Smith pulls new never seen before move during Game 1

A new superstition he’ll have to keep up with the win!?

The Calgary Flames managed to shut out the Colorado Avalanche 4-0 on Thursday to win Game 1 of their first-round series and it was all because starting goalie Mike Smith was dialled up. He made 26 saves to earn the first shutout of the postseason this spring.

Flames fans noticed how Smith was not only on fire, but really in tune with his teammates. The Flames confirmed that Smith would be the starter in this series a few hours before the game due to his playoff experience, however, it did not stop the veteran goalie to try something new.

During a TV break in the second period, Smith headed over to the bench for the extra man to come on the ice during a delayed penalty. However, as the game went into a TV timeout for a commercial break, Smith remained with his teammates at the bench, sitting down next to them as he listened in on what the coaching staff and players had to say.

After the break, the officials signalled the game was back on and Smith went back in between the pipes and continued to make impressive saves and giving advice to some of his teammates during timeouts.

It was just great to see Smith so involved and focused on taking this first win in the series to get the Flames in the lead.

We can’t say if the new move to join his teammates at the bench during the game is a new superstition of Smith, however, Cassie Campbell-Pascall was quick to note that it was never seen before: a goalie sitting at the team’s bench during the contest.

However, we love it! Keep it up, especially if the Flames keep on winning!
