Definitely some causes for concern.

The Pittsburgh Penguins played in their final game of the preseason on Saturday night and I think it is safe to say that things went rather poorly for the organization.

The Penguins were facing off against the Buffalo Sabres and although it was a meaningless preseason game in many ways, it came at a heavy cost for the Penguins. The Penguins would eventually fall to the Sabres by a score of 3 to 2 , however again it was only an exhibition game, but the real story for the Penguins coming out of the game was the absence of both Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and forward Bryan Rust. Both men were active in the game and both men left the game at different points and never returned to the ice.

Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan would confirm after the game that both men had been struck by a a shot at different points in the game, and also indicated that both men had also been injured as a result of those shots. Since then we have not heard much in the way of updates expect some reports suggesting that Crosby was spotted limping out of the arena on Saturday night, but that is not much to go on.

On Sunday morning however the Penguins hit the ice for a morning skate and noticeably absent from the practice with their teammates were both Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust. Crosby did skate for a very short period of time prior to that practice, literally a few seconds at most, but he left the ice and did not return following that short stint on the playing surface. Sullivan was of course immediately asked about the status of both players when he spoke to the media and he did provide some additional insight.

As far as Sidney Crosby is concerned it sounds like the Penguins captain has avoided the worst of it, but it is clear that he is indeed injured as Sullivan has listed the captain as "day to day." The Rust situation however sounds significantly more complicated however as Sullivan informed the assembled members of the media that Rust was "still being evaluated" at this time. This appears to hint at a more significant injury for Rust, but it is still too early to tell at this time.
