More details emerge to make sense of Emelin trade.

One of the weirdest trade to make sense of happened late today when we learned defenseman Alexei Emelin was to be traded from the Golden Knights to the Nashville Predators in exchange for a third round pick in 2019. At first, many thought the Predators were going crazy by filling up even more their blueline when they already possessed one of the most powerful (and costly) defensive squad in the league.

However, new details emerged that help make sense of the deal, more specifically about the cap space.

Emelin is in the last year of his 4 year 16,4M$ contract originally signed with Montreal. After being picked by Vegas, he's now moved to Nashville at a discount. The strategy is smart on Nashville's part, but it leaves some questions for Vegas. Why retain the salary of a guy in exchange of a 3rd round pick in 2 years? There's no clear advantage to this move by McPhee from our perspective, but maybe some details are missing to the story.

Anyhow, Emelin joins P.K. Subban in one of the most competitive franchise in the league. Some fans in Montreal are not so happy about how things turned out in the end.
