Trade seems extremely likely.

The Detroit Red Wings appear to be looking to trade one of their most well established players.

Earlier this week Detroit Red Wings insider Helen St. James strongly hinted at the fact that Red Wings veteran Gustav Nyquist was likely to be traded by the time the 2019 National Hockey League trade deadline has come and gone, and now there seems to be more evidence to support that claim. In the case of St. James she spoke directly to man himself about the rumors floating around regarding a potential trade, and to his credit Nyquist seemed to be pretty stoic about the whole thing.

“It’s a business and that’s part of the game,” Nyquist said as per the Detroit Free Press. “I’m sure my name will pop up. It will be a little bit new situation for me because this is my last year of the contract. It’s different, but it’s nothing I’ve thought about. Probably more as I get closer to the deadline. We’ll see.”

The move would make a ton of sense from the Red Wings' perspective, Nyquist is in the final year of his current deal with the team and is set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2018 - 2019 National Hockey League season. The Red Wings are obviously still a long way from rebuilding their franchise into a serious contender, especially the kind of contender that they boasted for so many years over the last two decades, and resigning Nyquist to a long term deal at 29 years of age doesn't seem to make a ton of sense from an organizational perspective.

St. James' speculation regarding a potential trade seems to be well founded, unsurprising given her record of excellent reporting when it comes to the inner workings of the Red Wings organization, as Nyquist has now also broken the top 5 on TSN's annual trade bait list. This indicates that the insiders at TSN also expect that Nyquist is highly likely to be traded this season, a move that would result in him playing for just the 2nd team of his entire NHL career.

It has to be noted however that Nyquist will have a great deal of control over how this plays out as he still has a no trade clause right up until the very end of his current deal.
