Murray's health is a huge problem for the Pens

How many more times can Murray get hurt before we have to question his ability as the team's starter?

You know the news by now, Pittsburgh Penguins starting goalie Matt Murray is expected to be out several weeks after suffering a lower-body injury last night in the 5-4 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Pens GM Jim Rutherford certainly couldn't predicted his starter would, yet again, get injured. Last night's injury is Murray's fifth in the past 19 months.

Matt Larkin of the Hockey News believes that something needs to be done in Pittsburgh since Murray's health is now a huge concern for the franchise's success.

"There’s nothing he could do to avoid getting crashed into by Philadelphia Flyers right winger Jakub Voracek. It was a fluke. But that doesn’t change the fact these injuries are becoming a trend in Murray’s short career," Larkin writes.

Larkin goes on to praise young backup Tristan Jarry's talent, who can handle the workload for now. However, Larkin assures he is not trying to spark yet another goaltending controversy in Pittsburgh.

"I’m not suggesting Murray shouldn’t be the Penguins starter. I’ve been his biggest supporter during his rise over the past few seasons – ask my colleagues, who regularly make fun of my Murray man crush – but I wonder if his grip on the starting job in Pittsburgh stays air tight if he keeps sustaining these injuries. They’re becoming as regular as Kris Letang’s injuries."

The Pens know all too well the massive toll injuries can have on a club, especially with all eyes turned on the team to complete a three-peat championship run. Larkin believes the Pens will try to land backup for Jarry in the meantime, maybe using new trade bait sensation Ian Cole, before Murray returns to his net.

But he does wonder how many more times can Murray get hurt before we have to question his ability to hold-up as a bellcow starting goalie?
