Must See: Banned from LCA for the opening octopus toss

One Windsor man made history, unfortunately for him he’s not welcome back…

Lifelong Detroit Red Wings fan Nick Horvath is a part of Detroit Red Wings history, but you won’t find his name in any of the team’s record books. The 30-year-old native of Windsor, Ontario is believed to be the final person to hurl an octopus onto the ice at the now retire Joe Louis Arena and is also the first to do so at the team’s brand new Little Caesars Arena

Immediately following the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, Horvath managed to hurl the eight-armed mollusc about “half way across the width of the ice” by his estimation. The reaction from the Red Wings faithful was as you might imagine. “Everyone started going nuts,” said Horvath. “Everyone’s loving you, they’re high-fiving you. You’re going nuts.”

Unfortunately for him, he didn’t get to witness the team’s historic first game in their new home as he was escorted out by security and eventually charged by Detroit police on a misdemeanour.  “People were booing security and shouting, ‘Let him go,’” he said.

For what it’s worth, Horvath wants the fans and the team to know that he meant no harm. He’s just trying to keep a long-lived tradition alive. “I just want to keep the tradition going especially at the new arena,” he said. “I wasn’t trying to disrupt anything, just keep it going.”

What do you think Wings fans? Do you want to keep the tradition going at the LCA?
