Wayne Gretzky’s illustrious history with Hockey Canada is well documented, not only as a player but as a manager and executive, as well. The Great One has represented Canada on the international stage as a player over a half dozen times, most notably when he won gold three straight times in the Canada Cup series from 1984-1991. He was also instrumental behind the scenes in Canada’s two gold medal championships at the Olympics in 2002 and 2010. Now, with the NHL refusing to participate in the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics, could Gretzky actually make a return to the ice?

Fat chance. Gretzky was jokingly asked by Sportsnet reporter Eric Engels if he would consider suiting up for Canada, given that there’s nothing in the rules preventing a former NHLer from participating. Check it out:

Fair enough. Still, we’d love to see how a 56-year-old, out of practice Wayne Gretzky compares to the rest of the rag-tag team that Hockey Canada is currently auditioning. At the very least it would give us something entertaining to look forward to, because as it is now the Olympics are shaping up to be a major disappointment.
