Must See: Jake Virtanen scores his first of the year

Eight shots, one goal, first star. Breakout game for Big Jake?

The Vancouver Canucks steamrolled the Detroit Red Wings tonight, rolling out of Little Caesars Arena 4-1 winners. Spurred on by two goals from sniper Sven Baertschi and another from 4th line winger Derek Dorsett, but the team’s best player all evening was Abbotsford native Jake Virtanen.

The big, 6’1”, 230 lb winger had an incredible eight shots on goal and FINALLY buried his first goal of the season on a two-on-one with Daniel Sedin. Virtanen tried to go high on Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard, but the attempt was swatted at… thankfully Howard left the rebound right in front where Virtanen scooped it up before firing it home.

Check it out:

Virtanen was buzzing all game for the Canucks and really looks like he’s turned a corner in his development. If he can bring this type of performance game in and game out, the former 6th overall draft pick just might quiet some of his critics.
