Must See: Sawchuk’s family pays tribute with incredible tattoos

Terry Sawchuk is one of the absolute legends of hockey. The four-time Stanley Cup champion was a veteran of 447 career wins and was the NHL’s all-time shutout leader for nearly four decades before eventually being surpassed by Martin Brodeur in 2009. The former Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers netminder was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame posthumously in 1971, having passed away suddenly the preceding year. 

While Sawchuk may be gone, his contributions to the game and the goaltending position will remain forever. Now, the next generation of the Sawchuk family, Terry’s son and grandson, are keeping his spirit alive in a truly unique way.

How cool is that? Jerry, Terry’s son and his son Jon now have the iconic image of Sawchuk’s fibreglass mask and his jersey number with them for all of eternity.

"We started out small, but when I talked to [the tattoo artist], he said he'd rather do it the size of a softball so he could get the detail of the mask in," Jerry says with a laugh. "We talked about incorporating my dad's jersey No. 1 in it and it just got bigger. And Jon and I chose our backs because I was going to be 63 and I didn't think I wanted anything on my biceps."
