The Vancouver Canucks were the final team in the NHL to make their 2017-18 season debut when they hit the ice at Rogers Arena last night to take on the Edmonton Oilers. But despite being the proverbial “last pick”, the team made a statement by gutting out an impressive 3-2 victory over the high-flying Oilers.

It was a night of other firsts as well, with Canucks sophomore Troy Stecher earning his first career NHL fight when he and Oilers forward Ryan Strome decided to square off late in the second period. None of the fans in attendance were expecting a big league fight from the two featherweights, but the pair put on one heck of a performance.

Check out the scrap:

Not bad at all. For all the talk about phasing out of enforcers and NHL heavyweights, if the game can get more spirited tilts like this it’ll be a net benefit for hockey fans. This also happened to be a pretty even scrap. Who did you think got the upper hand?
