Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell rocked a Montreal Canadiens Patrick Roy jersey for his team’s game last night, but if you thought it was because Mitchell has an adoration for the legendary NHL goaltender well… think again.

You see, if you’re a basketball fan, you may remember how Mitchell rocked an Adidas hoody last season to protest the fact that Philadelphia 76ers’ Ben Simmons was in the running for the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award despite playing in his second season with the team.

Mitchell’s hoody has the dictionary definition of the word “Rookie” and says, “An athlete playing in his or her first season as a member of a professional sports team.” Fans took this act as a protest and, ultimately, Simmons was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Year for 2018.

Which prompted last night’s Patrick Roy jersey:

Why Roy? Because R O Y stands for Rookie Of the Year…

Seriously…

Talk about a passive aggressive shot at the league. But then again… this is the NBA we’re talking about where EVERYONE has to make a statement.
