New COVID restrictions put the idea of an all-Canadian division to rest

Honestly... what's the point anymore? Just cancel the thing and try again in October 2021.

New COVID restrictions put the idea of an all-Canadian division to rest

Yesterday afternoon British Columbia Premier John Horgan announced that non-essential travel within the province of BC has been banned indefinitely. This of course puts a HUGE wrench into the NHL's reported plans for an all-Canadian division. If teams are unable to travel to Vancouver to face the Canucks and the Canucks themselves are unable to travel, it kind of defeats the purpose of an all-Canadian division.

You can see Horgan's full comments here, with travel restriction particulars at about the 7:30 minute mark.

Check it out:

Horgan has also formally asked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to ban travel within the rest of Canada's provinces, as well. If this comes to pass then the NHL has a much bigger problem on their hands.

Trudeau has yet to publicly respond to Horgan's plea and even if he did create such restrictions, it's possible that the NHL could apply for an exemption... but at this point... what's the point? The NHL is going to such great lengths just to put together a season with no fans and, frankly, a season that will absolutely decimate their finances. Easier for me to say from where I stand, but wouldn't it make more sense to simply pack it up and try again next Fall when there's a vaccine widely available? There's no shame in saying, "This isn't viable for us as a business, so we'll wait until it is."
