The National Hockey League was rocked by the news of Kyle Okposo being rushed into the "neuro intensive care unit" and while the specific details regarding his current condition remain a mystery, we now know more about where he is being treated and the possible reasons he may be there.

First and foremost, a neuro ICU is a specialized unit of doctors, nurses and physicians who all specialize in spinal and brain injuries. Here is how the Buffalo News' John Vogl described it:

It is reserved for the most seriously ill or injured patients. The staff must manage extremely complicated conditions with risks of death or disability that often require experts from multiple medical disciplines to diagnose and treat.

Needless to say based on this description the situation has to be viewed as one that is extremely serious, and while we were concerned for Okposo before, the fact that this could have a lasting impact on his life is truly terrifying.

While we still don't know exactly what is ailing Okposo, the Buffalo News was able to provide some details on what type of conditions would land someone in the neruo ICU:

Stroke, either from a blockage in an artery in the brain or a rupture from a hemorrhage, is a common disorder that lands patients in the units. But neuro ICUs also care for an array of other issues, including epilepsy, brain infections such as meningitis and encephalitis, degenerative disorders like Parkinson's disease, and brain tumors.

We continue to keep him in your thoughts and while the situation seems bleak we are still holding out hope for a full recovery.\
