There have been a lot of rumors about the Toronto Maple Leafs and a potential trade of their first overall pick in the draft to the Arizona Coyotes, presumably for the Coyotes to draft Arizona native Auston Matthews.

In a recent interview with Craig Morgan of Arizona Sports newly appointed Coyotes general manager John Chayka, in no uncertain terms refuted a rumor that suggested the Coyotes would trade Max Domi and both their No.7 and No.20 picks in the draft in exchnage for No.1.

“I’m not exactly sure where people come up with this stuff. I personally find some of the reports that are out there are pretty ridiculous speculation,” he said. “We’re still just in discussions, whether that means moving up or down, and up doesn’t even have to be No. 1.

“What we’re really looking at it is does this trade make your team better in the short term and in the long term?”

While refuting that rumor, according to Morgan, Chayka did admit that he would do his due diligence and would in fact explore a trade with the Maple Leafs with the hopes of finding a way to acquire Matthews.

From Craig Morgan:

Chayka has said previously that the Coyotes would do their due diligence and at least explore a trade with Toronto for the right to draft Matthews, but they would not give up a bunch of prospects to do so.

So the rumors may be wild and speculative, but there is certainly some merit to them.
