NHL cancels upcoming China games

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed yesterday that the league will not be scheduling preseason games in China for the 2019-20 preseason, following two successful campaigns to begin the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. The NHL will reportedly return to China for the 2020-21 season, however.

The NHL will not host exhibition games in China this season, citing lack of arena availability as the country celebrates 70th anniversary of the Chinese Revolution. NHL is still committed to the region, and will be doing other things there instead. Exhibition games return in 2020

The Boston Bruins and Calgary Flames faced off for two games in China this past September. However, despite the league not holding any games in China for next season, they have committed to investing in the area in the hopes of growing hockey ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China.

The NHL will not be going to China in the fall. Inability to book arenas is the reason. NHL plans to ramp up presence in China starting this summer with player and league visits and investments in youth hockey. Plan is to go back to have China Games in fall of 2020.
