A National Hockey League enforcer has officially announced his retirement from the game of hockey.

Former Ottawa Senator, Phoenix Coyote, Nashville Predator and Calgary Flames' enforcer Brian McGrattan took to social media on Friday and officially released a statement letting fans know that his on-ice career was at an end.

"Today I am announcing my retirement from pro hockey. Playing in the NHL has been a dram of mine since I was a young boy. I am so grateful to have been able to play almost 10 seasons with the best players in the best league in the world. I have fought some of the bravest and toughest warriors the game has ever seen. All of the guys I went to war with will always have my utmost respect. I have always viewed fighting as the only fight you lose is the one you don't show up for and I answered the bell every time."

McGrattan also thanked all of his fans and the teams he played for and stated he was looking forward to spending more quality time with both his son and his wife moving forward.

The announcement is not a huge surprise given that the Flames announced he would be taking on a position in player development with their organization earlier this week.
