It seems that we may have a trade brewing, and given the high level executives that were personally on hand on Saturday night it may be one that is coming in the not so distant future.

On Saturday night during the weekly "Headlines" segment during Hockey Night in Canada's second intermission, National Hockey League insider Chris Johnston revealed that the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Colorado Avalanche had some very high profile guests on hand watching their game. According to Johnston none other than St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong was on hand to personally scout the game and, as if that was not enough in its own right, he was also flanked by arguably his second in command vice president of hockey operations Dave Taylor.

"Yes Doug Armstrong is here, of the St. Louis Blues, and he is also with his vice president of hockey operations Dave Taylor," revealed Johnston during the segment. "Obviously whenever you see two senior executives from one team in a building it raises some eyebrows...

Now it would be fair to suggest that Armstrong and his staff could have been scouting the Avalanche as well as the Toronto Maple Leafs, but as it turns out there is good reason to suspect that they were there specifically to watch the Maple Leafs in action. During the segment Johnston also revealed that this was far from the first time the Blues had scouted the Leafs this season, and in fact it was not even the first time that Armstrong himself personally scouted the team.

"...but this is at least the second time that Armstrong has watched the Leafs play live this season and they have had a number of senior staffers around the Maple Leafs this season."

The question now of course becomes what exactly are the St. Louis Blues looking to do with the Maple Leafs here? There's no doubt given the sheer level of activity that they are scouting for a potential trade but unfortunately Johnston did not share any details regarding any potential targets on the Maple Leafs roster that might interest Doug Armstrong and his defending Stanley Cup Champions. We can speculate however and when you consider that the Blues have already lost Vladimir Tarasenko, Alex Steen, and Sammy Blais this season it could be that Armstrong is looking to fill the holes left by those players. The Maple Leafs are obviously flush with talent at the forward position and we have all heard the rumors over the last year that linked players like Andreas Johnsson and Kasperi Kapanen to trade rumors around the league.

Now to be clear that is purely speculation on my part at this time and it is entirely possible that the Blues are thinking something completely different at this time, but if I had to put my money down on something I would bet that they are looking at Toronto's wingers. One thing is certain however, with Armstrong personally scouting the Maple Leafs on two separate occasions as well as sending out senior members of his staff to keep a close eye on the Maple Leafs, something is going down here.
