If you've been wondering why there is so much pressure on the NHL to implement new rule changes regarding equipment, wonder no longer.

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Robin Lehner dropped some knowledge this week when he called out his fellow goaltenders for he clearly feels is abuse of the existing equipment standards.

“A guy that’s 175 shouldn’t have a chest protector where he looks like he’s a 350-pound guy,” Lehner said as per the New York Times.

Lehner didn't go so far as to call anyone out personally, that is to say he didn't name any names, but he certainly dropped some clues that could lead to speculate about which of the goaltenders in the National Hockey League he was referring to.

“I know what all the goalies around the league look like with their pads on,” Lehner said. “Some of the small guys look the biggest.”

So how bad has the abuse been at the National Hockey League level? Well according to comments from Lehner there are goaltenders who quite literally double up on their equipment just to appear larger than they should between the posts.

“I don’t think anyone should have pants underneath their pants. There’s goalies that have pants underneath their pants. That’s a fact. People in the league know it.”

The new equipment rules won't be in place for the regular season but they are coming and there's almost no doubt that they will be in effect for 2017-2018 and there's also very little doubt Robin Lehner will be in full support once they arrive.
