During the course of last night’s game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning, fans seemed to pick up on an ugly detail.

During a waived icing call, Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly appeared to very pointedly look at the linesman and shout a homophobic slur. We won’t even print the words coming out of Rielly’s mouth, but you can hear for yourself.

The NHL has announced that it’s officially investigating the alleged infraction:

Additionally, Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas put out the following statement after the game and the allegations came to light:

"The Club is aware of the reports surrounding a homophobic slur used during the Maple Leafs versus Lightning game on Monday night. The issue of homophobia is one the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club strongly condemns and takes very seriously. We are in communication with the NHL and are cooperating fully with their office."

Not a good look for the player, the team or the league. Here’s hoping Rielly does the right thing.

For what it’s worth, Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf was fined $10,000 in 2017 for making a homophobic slur, while Montreal Canadiens forward Andrew Shaw was suspended one game in 2016 for the same infraction.
