The NHL officially unveiled the three nominees for its Mark Messier Leadership Award earlier today and, surprise, surprise, we have two captains and a heart and soul forward on the ballot.

Earning the distinction this year are Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano, Carolina Hurricanes captain Justin Williams and Nashville Predators forward Wayne Simmonds.

Neither Giordano, Williams nor Simmonds have been nominated before.

The Mark Messier award was first handed out in the 2006-07 season and has seen legends like Chris Chelios, Mats Sundin, Jarome Iginla, Zdeno Chara, Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews have won the award in past season.

Your 2019 Nominees for the Mark Messier Leadership Award (Leadership and Community Growth): Giordano (CAL); Simmonds (NASH); Williams (CAR).
