The NHL Network released their list of top 50 players on Friday. The most notable portion of this ranking is the top 10.

There are few surprises here. However, it is interesting to note that young Edmonton Oilers phenom Connor McDavid has supplanted Sidney Crosby for best player in the league. This is a hotly contested debate these days – there’s no doubt that McDavid will be the best player in this league for years to come, but is he already better than Sid the Kid?

It’s also interesting to see two goalies on this list in Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens and Braden Holtby of the Washington Capitals. Price is widely considered the best goalie in the world, but some will make the case for Holtby as well, based on his numbers. Max Pacioretty recently said in interview with ESPN that the Caps netminder is the hardest to score on. Big words from one of the league’s most prolific scorers.

A notable omission on this list is Alex Ovechkin. Despite remaining a veritable sniper, he doesn’t appear to have aged as well as his longtime rival Sidney Crosby.
