This was totally unnecessary.

Fans in Philadelphia were not happy with the non-call on this play last night, and now they have received some measure of justice.

The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has reviewed a play that occurred during the Wednesday night match up between the Flyers and the Washington Capitals, one in which Flyers rookie sensation Shayne Gostisbehere was given a butt-end cheap shot from Capitals forward Jason Chimera.

It wasn't the most vicious strike in the world, but anyone who's ever been on the receiving end of a butt-end shot like that will tell you they can be deceptively painful. While Chimera will not be suspended for his offense, he has been fined $5,000 by the league and furthermore he will now be considered a repeat offender if he is disciplined again in the next 18 months.

Fans of the Flyers' were probably hoping for at least one game, but this seems like a reasonable call from Player Safety.
