NHL reveals winners for assist, goal and save of the year.

Each and every year in the National Hockey League we talk about goal of the year candidates and save of the year candidates as the regular season wears on but, in spite of the fact that there are always a ton of worthy nominees, at the end of the day there can only be one true winner.

On Saturday the NHL announced this year's winners for "goal of the year," "save of the year," and "assist of the year," as voted on by the NHL fans and barring perhaps one exception there seemed to be a general consensus around the NHL's final picks. That would make sense given that, again, this is an award voted on by the fans, but that hasn't always been the case.

We will start with our winner for "save of the year" for the 2021 - 2022 NHL season, and this time the award will go to New York Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin. Sorokin wins the award for what was an outright robbery of intrastate rival Artemi Panarin of the New York Rangers, a robbery he pulled off with nothing but his paddle. In spite of the fact that Panarin appeared to have a giant open chasm in front of him, Sorokin managed to make the desperation save by blocking the shot with his stick, only for the puck to seemingly roll down the length of his stick and bounce harmlessly away by sliding under Sorokin himself.

In what is perhaps the least surprising award of the year in the NHL this season, "assist of the year" is going to the Anaheim Ducks' Tevor Zegras. We've all seen it a thousand times but don't worry, it will still be amazing every time you watch it.

The only contentious award was the "goal of the year" which in the end has been award to Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar for his incredible goal against the Chicago Blackhawks earlier in the season.

Some fans clearly felt that Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid deserved the award for his goal against the New York Rangers, so I'll include both here and let you be the judge.
