We were reportedly down to six candidates in the National Hockey League’s selection process on where the two hub cities will be located for a potential season resumption later this summer. On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Dallas Stars were informed that they will not be host to the league’s return to play plan, shortening the original list of 10 hub cities down to six with Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Chicago all still in the mix.

However on Thursday morning, breaking news reported that Vancouver, who was believed to be amongst top contenders to host games, has been ruled out.

On Wednesday, Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston revealed on Instant Analysis that the NHL had started proceedings of booking hotels in Vancouver. It appears to be a false rumour as Global’s Richard Zussman explained what has taken Vancouver out of the running.

“The big hold up as reported by Sportsnet yesterday is the issue of what happens if a player or staff member gets sick while in the hub quarantine. We are hoping to get more clarity on this today from Dr. Henry
“The other issue is whether players and staff can be part of the same hub quarantine. The NHL is also interested in Ontario’s policy where someone who tests positive and is asymptomatic can still go to work. This would not be the case in BC.
“BC Health officials are ensuring any NHL plan is in the best interest of the health of British Columbians. The province still believes Vancouver offers the league the best option in terms of low COVID-19 risk and world class facilities.”

Toronto made a strong push to hold NHL games this week, and it is believe the league will be in contact with Toronto and Vancouver later today.

Vancouver could have a chance back only if Toronto and Edmonton also get ruled out of the process, as it is believed one of the two hub cities will be located in Canada.

However for now, it seems that it won’t be in Vancouver.

UPDATE : Later on Thursday, it was confirmed that Vancouver is officially out as an NHL hub city for Return to Play.
