Please, Connor… save us from these awful video review calls.

No doubt that there has been no shortage of controversial calls in the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season. From the Cody Eakin major in round one, to the Timo Meier hand pass in the Western Conference Final and now to the Tyler Bozak non-call in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, NHL officials have had a tough go of things lately.

Some fans are calling for an expansion of the NHL’s video review rules, which would enable the on-ice officials to call upon video officials for confirmation on certain situations. The fact that a goal cannot be overturned due to a blatant hand pass, but it can if a player is a fraction of an inch offside points to just how ridiculous the NHL’s rules are surrounding video replay.

Currently the NHL reviews any goal to determine whether or not the puck cross the line, additional reviews are either initiated by the officials or by a coach’s challenge for offside or goaltender interference. But a cast of NHL stars, led by superstars Connor McDavid and John Tavares, are meeting in Toronto today to discuss the state of video review with the league.

Check out this report from NHL insider John Shannon of Sportsnet:

In this fan’s opinion, we suffer from too much review already. I’m old school: Let the refs call the action on the ice and live or die with the results. I may be in the minority here, but I find it ruins the game when every goal has to be dissected from multiple angles to determine whether or not it counts. Imagine the overtime game winner on Wednesday evening being called back after it was determined that a player’s skate blade hadn’t “crossed the plane” of the ice surface… good grief. Enough with the navel gazing, NHL…
