NHL team announces jersey retirement for Hall of Famer

The Philadelphia Flyers have announced that they’ll retire legendary Flyers forward Eric Lindros’ iconic number 88 this upcoming season.

The honor is certainly well earned, but given Lindros’ history with the franchise it wasn’t always thought to be in the offing. Now, after 17 years since he left the Flyers, it looks as though time has healed the wounds.

Lindros was one of the most dominating players of his generation and scored a remarkable 290 goals and 659 points in just 486 games with the Flyers over eight seasons. He retired in 2007 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016.

"I am deeply humbled and honored that the Flyers are going to retire my jersey," said Lindros in the team’s formal announcement. "I am so thankful to the entire organization for this incredible recognition. I look forward to sharing this moment with my family, friends, teammates, and of course Flyers fans, who mean so much to me."

Lindros will join Bernie Parent, Mark Howe, Barry Ashbee, Bill Barber and Bobby Clarke as Flyers legends who have had their numbers retired. Fans will have an opportunity to see The Big E in person and watch his 88 raised to the rafters on January 18th when the Flyers take on Lindros’ hometown team Toronto Maple Leafs.
