A National Hockey League franchise has just made a very interesting move.

The Winnipeg Jets obviously feel they have been taking far too many penalties and now, according to a report from Sean Reynolds of Sportsnet, the Jets have hired a former NHL referee to help give them an advantage when it comes to avoiding them.

From Reynolds:

The Winnipeg Jets have reached out to the NHL for help tackling penalty issues that have plagued the team for some time, and they’ll get it in the form of Paul Devorski.

The retired NHL referee will be at training camp on Friday where he will officiate the team during battle drills to give Jets players a better sense of how to stay within the rules.

The Jets finished with the second most penalties in the league last season, and had the sixth most penalties in the league in their two previous campaigns, they have nothing to lose by trying something creative like this.
