NHL team trying to trade for Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall!

This would be a shocker.

Well this is certainly a spicy one.

When you hear the name of NiKlas Kronwall there are likely two thoughts that immediately pop into your head, his signature hit along the boards at the blue line, and the red and white that he has worn his entire career as a member of the Detroit Red Wings organization. Kronwall has played in over 930 games during the course of his National Hockey League career and all of them have been as a member of the Detroit Red Wings franchise, a team that many expect him to end his career with. So would it not be crazy to hear that Kronwall may not even make it to the end of the day as a member of the Red Wings?

Well according to a breaking news report from Columbus Blue Jackets insider Aaron Portzline of The Athletic, the Columbus Blue Jackets have no expressed interest in acquiring the veteran blue liner from the Detroit Red Wings and it sounds like the deal is not outside the realm of possibility. Portzline does add that it is currently unclear whether or not Kronwall wants to leave Detroit at the end of his career, but it may not be entirely up to him whether or not he is traded before the end of the day today.

Kronwall does have some trade protection built into his current contract with him being able to submit a 10 team trade list to the Detroit Red Wings, although it is entirely unclear at this time if that list would include the Blue Jackets organization or not. Should the Jackets not be on that list of 10 teams Kronwall would have to waive his trade protection in order for the Red Wings and Red Wings general manager Ken Holland to be able to pull the trigger on this deal, and it's unclear if he would do so.

Do keep in mind though that the Blue Jackets appear to be going all in for a Stanley Cup Championship this season, already having added star forward Matt Duchene as well as forward Ryan Dzingel who is on pace for 30 goals this season. That has to be attractive to a veteran player who wants to win a Stanley Cup Championship although Kronwall is a legacy player in Detroit and it remains to be seen if he really wants to add another team to his resume after playing his entire career as a Red Wing.
