We are waiting for the official announcement from the National Hockey League, however it is expected that the league will extend the recommended period of self-isolation for players and staff beyond Thursday.

According to many insiders including Darren Dreger of TSN and Chris Johnston, the league is looking to push the quarantine period until mid-May as the pandemic remains a threat.

“As we await word from the NHL about officially extending the recommended period of self-isolation for players and staff beyond Thursday, there continues to be some hope/belief among teams that facilities could start opening for small-group skates as soon as May 15.

Of course, that would only be done in compliance with local government restrictions in each market. And likely only if the NHL decides to allow team facilities to open on a staggered basis, pending local orders, like the NBA intends to do starting May 8.”

The possibility of that facilities could start opening for small-group skates as soon as May 15 remains an option. It remains to be seen which markets and teams will benefit from it.

The National Hockey League continues to analyze all possible scenarios in order to save the 2019-20 season and especially get the playoffs underway in the coming weeks.

The NHL season has been paused since March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is not the first time the league has been forced to extend the quarantine period of its players and staff.
