The Toronto Maple Leafs made the move official on Friday morning: the team has loaned forward Nic Petan to the Toronto Marlies on Friday, leaving 22 players on their 23-man roster.

Petan was acquired at the trade deadline last season from the Winnipeg Jets but has appeared in just nine games since joining the Leafs. He has collected one assist in four games this season after posting one goal in five games in 2018-19.

A move was expected to be made shortly in Toronto seeing that captain John Tavares is expected back after two weeks on the sideline with a broken finger.

Fans feel for the poor guy who’s known a rough last year. As documented by TSN, Petan was told his father Franc died by suicide on Sept. 18, 2018 as he was training with the Jets. Stricken with grief, he needed time off the game.

While Petan has been given a new opportunity in Toronto, the pain of losing his father to mental illness remains fresh and painful.

Petan, who was selected in the second round back in 2013, has six goals and 25 points in 117 career games with the Jets and Maple Leafs.
