No team wants to make a trade with the Oilers as deadline fast approaches

The trade baits might not be good enough...

The Edmonton Oilers currently sit six points back of the Minnesota Wild for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference and while the players keep saying they're focused on making the postseason, it seems like they will need some help to ensure a playoff spot and make a good run at it. However, there might be a bigger issue at hand here...

There is an urgent cap crunch issue as the Oilers need to make a move in order to clear $1.97 million in cap space in order to activate Andrej Sekera from injured reserve. However TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reports that Edmonton has been trying to move two players on the trade market, but no team has been interested.

"As for the Edmonton Oilers, Andrej Sekera is nearly wrapping up his conditioning stint in Bakersfield," McKenzie said on Insider Trading. "This is a player who we thought might come up after Wednesday night’s game in Bakersfield, but now it’s looking more and more like it could go through the weekend.
"Here’s the interesting thing, they’ve been trying to trade Alex Petrovic and Brandon Manning, the blueliners they acquired a while ago, there hasn’t been any go on that obviously. They need to move those guys out, or put them on waivers, if they are going to create the cap space for Sekera coming up next week."

The Oilers have found no takers thus far and it sure seems like they will need to up their trade game if they want to get something in return or even just clear enough cap space to reinsert Sekera in the lineup.

The Oilers acquired Petrovic in return for Chris Wideman and a conditional third-round pick and landed Manning and Robin Norell from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Drake Caggiula and Jason Garrison.

The trade baits might not be good enough for any team to want to make a deal with the Oilers at this point.
