Oilers Caleb Jones “unfit to practice.”

A strange designation.

The National Hockey League is, for some reason, going above and beyond to keep any potential information linking a player's identity to a positive test for COVID-19 a secret. This means that teams around the league have been instructed not to report any injuries or illnesses their players may have suffered and instead leave that to the league who will only report the numbers and not the names or teams of the players involved.

This is going to lead to a ton of speculation regarding positive tests and I have no doubt it will create a rather negative atmosphere all around, and today we have our very first example of that. Earlier this morning Edmonton Bureau reporter for TSN Ryan Rishaug revealed that Oilers defenseman Caleb Jones had been listed as "unfit to practice" by the team which immediately led to speculation that the 23 year old blue liner was dealing with COVID-19. It now appears that this is not the case given that Jones will still be skating today, albeit with a smaller group of players and not with the main component of the Oilers training camp roster.

Of course this provides no additional clarity on what exactly Jones is currently dealing with so that will only lead to more needless speculation regarding his absence.
