Oilers cap off a huge surge this week thanks to McDavid and Draisaitl.

Huge shift for the Oilers.

After a tough loss to the Nashville Predators on the 20th of October the Oilers were looking at a record of 2 - 3 - 1 to start the 2018 - 2019 National Hockey League regular season and there was serious, and understandable, concern among the fan base that the Oilers were headed for yet another catastrophic season.

That being said though the Oilers have now shown a quality that they were sorely lacking last season, resilience, and after a huge week coming off the heels of that tough loss to the Predators the Oilers have now surged back into contention thanks in large part to the play of superstar forward Connor McDavid. After losing to the Predators the Oilers went on to rattle off 4 consecutive wins to improve their record to 6 - 3 - 1 on the season, a record that has now placed them atop the Pacific Division, at least for the time being. That is made all the more impressive by the fact that no team in the Pacific has played fewer games than the Oilers at this stage of the season which means the Oilers have some games in hand to continue padding their lead, should they continue on this trend.

On Sunday night the Oilers faced off against the Chicago Blackhawks and to be perfectly honest the Blackhawks largely controlled the pace of the game. I believe it's more than fair to say that through 60 minutes of play the Blackhawks got the best of the Oilers but thanks to some very solid play from goaltender Cam Talbot the Oilers were able to keep the game tied through regulation play and force an overtime period. Thankfully for the Oilers the fact that they can put both the aforementioned Connor McDavid  and forward Leon Draisaitl on the ice at the same time during the overtime frame gives them a rather deadly weapon in overtime.

As you would expect in these situations McDavid and Draisaitl did indeed work their magic again in overtime, thanks to a great defensive play from McDavid that led to a 2 on 1 and another Oilers win. Here's the replay:
