Oilers claim goaltender Troy Grosenick off of waivers.
NHLI/Nashville Predators

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired a new goaltender.

According to a breaking news report from National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman, goaltender Troy Grosenick has been claimed by the Oilers on the waiver wire. Grosenick, who was placed on waivers by the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, will now have the chance to play for just the 2nd NHL team of his career.

Grosenick, a 31 year old from Brookfield Wisconsin, has spent the majority of his career in the American Hockey League playing under the umbrella of the San Jose Sharks and Nashville Predators organizations. His most recent work has come as a member of the Milwaukee Admirals, the AHL affiliate of the Predators, with two solid seasons back to back. In the 2018 - 2019 season he recorded a 2.41 goals against average and a .919 save percentage over 46 games and he had similar numbers last year with a 2.29 goals against average and a .920 save percentage over 33 games in the shortened AHL season.

The move here from the Oilers is clearly designed to replace goaltender Mike Smith who was sidelined with a relatively serious injury this week. There has been no real update on Smith other than the fact that he was placed on long term injured reserve, but any injury that serious at 38 years old is always going to be a cause for long term concern. Not many loved the decision to bring Smith back for another season when the signing was announced by general manager Ken Holland, and no doubt fans love it even less now that they know Smith is already facing some serious issues this season.

Grosenick will help the Oilers fill the vacancy left by Smith's absence in the short term and only time will tell if this becomes a long term solution for the Oilers or if general manager Ken Holland will look for something of a more established replacement for his injured veteran goaltender.

On a final note, for those wondering about Grosenick's experience at the NHL level there is not much to be said. His only two credited appearances were with the San Jose Sharks where he recorded a 1.53 goals against average and a .948 sace percentage in 118 minutes of combined ice time.
