Oilers Forward Calls His Own Shot

Last night’s 4-3 overtime win for the Edmonton Oilers over the San Jose Sharks featured everything that fans have come to love about playoff hockey. Big goals, big saves and big hits. It featured off the rush scoring plays and an unlikely playoff OT hero: David Desharnais. But…should we really be surprised that Desharnais buried the big goal for the Oilers? After all, he was making predictions just earlier in the day…

For Desharnais and the Oilers, it happened at just the perfect time. The 30 year-old veteran, who was acquired from the Montreal Canadiens at the NHL trade deadline, took a feed in the Sharks slot from Leon Draisaitl and quickly lifted the puck over Sharks goaltender Martin Jones’ glove before raising his arms to the sky in celebration.

Somebody was the hero alright, and last night it was the man who has been victimized by the team’s media and fans since arriving in Edmonton. With only two goals and four points in 18 regular season games with the Oilers, Desharnais had been relegated to the team’s 4th line and faced criticism from all angles.  Last night, however, none of that mattered as Desharnais silenced his critics and scored his team’s biggest goal of the season. Just like he said he would.
