There is a new sense of priorities in Edmonton ever since Ken Holland took over as the Oilers general manager and one is to make sure key pieces are added to the roster to make sure captain Connor McDavid has all the support he needs to score and get the team back as a contender.

While Holland is said to be looking at the trade market for different options,  Oilers insider Ryan Rishaug of TSN believes one great solution is available to Edmonton on the free-agent market.

Brett Connolly is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in July and is expected to explore his options with other teams this week before circling back to the Washington Capitals, with whom he spent the last two seasons and won a Stanley Cup in 2018. He in fact assisted on the Cup-winning goal, scored by Lars Eller.

Rishaug sees Connolly has a great option for the Oilers to acquire an ideal complimentary goal scoring winger for either McDavid or Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Connolly had 22 goals and 24 assists last season and could be the added boost the Oilers have been looking for.

The Capitals have not tendered a qualifying offer to Connolly and the Western Canadian boy could be tempted to play in Edmonton.

However, is it the best option out there? It is hard to say before the price might be quite steep for another option, especially seeing that the Oilers are cap-strapped…

It could be quite an affordable and productive option to sign Connolly as a free agent with only $8.3-million in cap space.

What do you think?
