The Edmonton Oilers are only in action Saturday night in New York City to face the Rangers - both teams are undefeated - however, the Canadian team will make a stop in Raleigh to prepare for a move.

According to team insider Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal, the Oilers are expected to scout Friday night’s game between the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Islanders and focus their attention on rookie Julien Gauthier.

After playing all six games for the Canes in the preseason, Gauthier was disappointed to be assigned to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League, however, he was recalled for tonight’s game after scoring two goals in two AHL games.

Matheson believes the Oilers will take a closer look at Gauthier in order to make a trade offer with Jesse Puljujarvi.

Puljujarvi, who has been playing overseas after demanding a trade out of Edmonton, has been on the Hurricanes’ radar for weeks.

Just like Puljujarvi, Gauthier is a former first-round draft pick by Carolina, who scored 27 goals in 75 games for the Checkers last season. He also helped them win the franchise’s first Calder Cup with five goals and eight points in the 17 playoff games.

We could be getting close to a trade in Edmonton…
